We act today
To reduce our environmental impact
We are aware that when our business expands, so does our environmental impact and the challenge to improve energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions, and find innovative environmental solutions along our entire value chain.
With that in mind, Mercado Libre’s carbon footprint is measured and disclosed on an annual basis, along with the development of mitigation initiatives. Measuring the carbon footprint is a key strategy for a prompt identification and implementation of reduction actions while our business grows. We have also created the Regenera América program to finance initiatives for the regeneration and conservation of biomes in Latin America. The program aims at fostering the restoration chain, generating carbon credits in the future, local development, and the conservation of native ecosystems.
As a clear sign of Mercado Libre’s long-term commitment to this agenda, in 2021 we launched the first Sustainability Bond of the company a total initial amount of USD 400 million to provide regular financing to Regenera América and other similar initiatives.
In addition, in 2022 we began the process of developing science-based targets and goals for reducing emissions. We use the Science Based Targets (SBTi) methodology, a joint initiative between the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the UN Global Compact, the World Resources Institute and the World Wildlife Fund. The goal is to follow this methodological framework and share our progress transparently in our annual carbon emissions report.

Impact stories

"We are running a project that, in addition to responding to the sense of urgency for the carbon footprint, strengthens local governance and brings the landowner into the dialogue, with economic results beyond the indirect benefits brought by conservation and restoration of the territory."

“Mercado Libre is helping us restore 750,000 trees in a 250-hectare-woodland, creating direct jobs for the local community that will be in charge of growing the trees and take care of the woodland in the future.”

“At Mercado Libre, we are committed to growing while generating the lowest possible environmental impact. With the use of electric vans, we can deliver packages within 24-48-hours, in line with this goal.”
