A new year of Entropía

More than 1,000 young people will be trained in STEM skills with a view to start engineering careers

Together with the Facultad Regional de Buenos Aires de la Universidad Tecnológica Nacional (UTNBA), the initiative will include 400 pre-university students and 800 high school students through teacher training in 10 public schools in La Matanza, Buenos Aires. In 2021, more than 860 young people participated in the Entropía program and 91% of them started careers in engineering.

According to the Chamber of the Argentine Software Industry, there are currently 5,000 open job vacancies in the technology sector. This number rises to 15,000 when we consider demand from other industries. To encourage more young people to get into engineering careers, Mercado Libre will support the Entropía program in 2022, carried out in partnership with the Facultad Regional de Buenos Aires de la Universidad Tecnológica Nacional (UTNBA).

The initiative aims to promote young students’ entry into engineering careers by leveling up STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) knowledge and skills, preparing participants for the high-demand careers of the future.

This year, in order to expand its reach and inspire vocations in younger students, the initiative will form part of an institutional project to train teachers. In total, the Entropía program will reach 800 students from schools in La Matanza, Buenos Aires, in Argentina. In addition, it will continue with its regular work, which benefits 400 pre-university students from the cities of Tres de Febrero and Buenos Aires, also in Argentina.

The program lasts for one year and offers active training opportunities for young people to acquire the basic knowledge needed to get into an engineering career. Approved students can start any engineering course at UTN without taking the entrance exam.

“In 2021, we saw the graduation of the engineers from the first year of the Entropia project (2014). It is a source of pride and great joy to see how a vector as powerful as education, in such a short time, can help people to have more and better opportunities.”

Jorge Almiña, director of Entropía.

“At Mercado Libre, we understand that education is central to the inclusion and social equity agenda and, therefore, we continue to promote programs such as Entropía. This initiative, which allows us to accompany young people in improving their knowledge in fundamental subjects such as mathematics and physics, aims, not only to allow them to enter engineering careers, but also to reinforce key competences for the knowledge industry, guaranteeing a better performance in the world of work.”
